Tooth Whitening Q & A
Q. What does tooth whitening do?
A. Tooth whitening can be a highly effective yet very simple method of lightening the colour of teeth which does not need the removal of any tooth structure. The enamel surface of your teeth may seem smooth but if you look under a microscope you will see pores similar to those on your skin. Stain causing food and drinks enter your teeth through these pores which become larger and less resistant to staining with age.
Q. What procedures are available?
A. At Riverside we have two procedures available both of which are preceded by a thorough oral examination to assess suitability. Both procedures involve the dentist taking impressions of upper and lower teeth so that a technician can custom make reusable bleaching trays.
Home Whitening
Using the specially made trays, which fit into the mouth like a gun shield the whitening gel, is applied at home, over a period of one to two weeks. The system works by penetrating the tooth enamel and oxidising the organic deposits lightening the colour of the teeth.
Zoom in Surgery Whitening System
This is a tooth whitening procedure carried out in the surgery using whitening gel which was specially designed to be used with our new state of the art Zoom light. The light and gel work together gently to penetrate the teeth, lightening discolouration of enamel and dentine, taking approximately ninety minutes.
Q. How long does it last?
A. Your dentist will discuss the possible results with you which depend on the original shade of your teeth and the maintenance required after whitening to keep the results for as long as possible.
Q. Is it safe?
A. Yes, extensive research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth under supervision of a dentist is safe. You may experience sensitive teeth for the first few days and highly coloured foods, black coffee and red wine should be avoided for the first 48 hours after whitening.
Q. What is the cost?
A. The cost of our new Zoom whitening system with the convenience of a surgery visit of approximately ninety minutes is £595.
The cost of the conventional whitening procedure using custom made trays and gel at home is £350.
